1983 was not such a long time ago, sonny!  :)  Hammett is definitely part of the 2nd generation.  Heavy Metal was born with Black Sabbath in 1969, and the great 70\'s were it\'s cradle.  Metallica was an 80\'s band, thus 2nd generation.

BTW Slash is overrated.  I\'d put Ted Nugent on before Slash.  :p

That\'s a small sample, I would say.  :)

I hate to belabor this point, but I feel I must state the facts.  I\'ve been playing guitar for 19 years, and I\'ve had the good fortune to have several teachers.  I\'ve also met a number of professional guitarists, and I\'ve never personally met anyone who believes that Jimi Hendrix is not the greatest rock guitar player of all time.  As I said, there are those who deny it in interviews, but they usually do so to attract attention.

You also don\'t have to be a rock\'n\'roller to appreciate Jimi.  I recall once witnessing Christopher Parkening perform transcriptions of "Purple Haze" and "Little Wing" on the classical guitar.

I just found it a little odd that you cited Stevie Ray Vaughan as being superior to Hendrix, when SRV stated throughout his life that Hendrix was his hero, and that no one could ever equal him.  BTW, that\'s what most other guitarists say also.

Heh, the initial list is a total joke if it\'s sorted from "best" to "worst".

Gilmour at no.82? He\'s on par with Clapton, IMHO. Eddie Van Halen at no.70 is a travesty. Speaking of travesties.. no Steve Vai, and no mention of Buck Dharma.. who whomps at least Kurt Cobain.

I hate to say it, but guitarists.. well.. I don\'t think you should get brownie points for thrash metal and stuff like that. Some of the guys that Rolling Stone picked might are generic, garage band stuff. Just because you think that the songs were good, Rolling Stone.. doesn\'t mean that the guitarists were.

I also hate to say that certain forms of music have gone downhill over the past 15 years. Rock is one of them, especially with the alternative revolution. Just my opinion, but garage bands were made into gods and frankly I gotta say that a lot of the stuff (even a lot of Nirvana\'s stuff) is just plain rotten. They have their good songs, their classic songs.. but angst-filled music is one brick in that big wall of corruption in our society. Who told people that listening to jackasses screaming obscenities into a microphone while thrashing a guitar was worth multi-platinum sales?

Not me. ;) Heh, sorry if I offended anybody\'s tastes.. but I detest a lot of today\'s music.

No Django Reinhardt?!?!?! BAH.

BB King is high on the list so I am happy.

BTW, Cored why would you take Ike Turner off the list. He has some of the greatest hits ever. Didn\'t you see "Whats love got to do with it?"

You are almost right, but it depends on what type of metal/rock you are reffering to. Most metal bands today (and im not talking about death metal, grind/or thrash core) Is very basic and when i go to shows they rarely even play cords! Its all a bunch of crap when all they do is play one line of strings in one frat. Now there is a lot of death metal or just plain harder shit that may not deserve a slot in the top 100 but the guitarists have mad talent and it shows through the diversity of their music, (eventhough it might be yelling obscenities into a mic, which it isnt always).

Like i said, it would be soo incredibly difficult to compile a true top 100 list and not have decisions based, or influenced by bias.

Theres even this guy with like 3 fingers that plays almost as good as Joe Sat or Vai etc. Now thats some crazy shit. ;)
