Ermm… I think I can contribute a little to this Topic, pretty interesting BTW.
Of course, Spanish is becoming more and more important everyday. Just notice that the order of languages in the world according to number of speakers is:
1)Chinese
2)English
3)Spanish
What that means? Chinese is spoken by a lot of people, much more than English and Spanish, but it’s actually an unknown language outside Chine. Chine is a rather important country in terms of population and economy, but of “little importance in the international scene”.
English and Spanish on the other hand are widely spread over large territories on the earth. Many countries share both languages which makes an important point when you are able to speak both of them.
I can speak Spanish, but also English. I will never speak English such a native speaker, but they will never do so with the Spanish. That’s natural. Speaking these two languages will open you many doors, many job offers. Nowadays, English is over Spanish in terms of prominence. That’s crystal clear. But Spanish is now quite important in USA, day by day there are more Spanish speakers there. I few time, south USA will have an important number of Spanish, which will carry benefits to those who are able to speak both languages.
I must agree in the opinion that you should learn the native language you’re living in. You’re not forced, of course, but ethically speaking you may do it.
And GigaShadow, what’s the difference between the spanish colonizers taking the control of America in 15th and 16 century and you americans in Irak? I cannot see any difference: both are pathetic.
Merry Christmas
