Also, it makes a lot more sense to take Japanese than Spanish. There are a billion + people on the world who know Japanese.  That would be a huge + on your resume if you got into the financial market or the trade industry.

No offense, but I don\'t aspire to talk to the patrons at friggen Walmart.

from your standpoint, yeah i feel any ethnic grp outside u.s. should learn english, just like we would have to learn their language if we moved over there. not being cruel or anything
but that\'s just what would happen. Now on a personal note, it
can\'t hurt knowing 2 languages or more as in the job field it can
be very helpful

now vid as far as talkin to patrons in walmart,..some of those patrons are hot! I guess some of them are. I heard on the news a while back somebody from either playboy or hustler wanted
some chicks from those stores be in their mag. i guess all those women can\'t be gruesome lumderjack shirt wearin ass scrathin
behemoths right? ;)
knowledge, wisdom & understanding..these are the basic fundamentals of life

if you can\'t amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t....

Actually Vid, it would be more wise to make an effort to learn Chinese or Mandarin.

Dora the Explorer is a cartoon my kid watches.  They totally intermix spanish and english.  I was chatting with Logan last night and he started syaing spanish words.  Pacinio (I don\'t know how it is spelled) which means little.  He said that and Grande.  I asked him what they meant and he said Little and big.

Dude is like a little sponge.

And yes I agree, Chinese is very important.

When I listen to the Chinese speak more than any other language I say to myself, "Dude?  You can\'t tell me that was a sentence."

Yeah, I say "Dude" to myself.

All of us are immigrants and a lot of us have ancestors who didn\'t speak English when they arrived here... they knew they had to learn it to make a living and they did so.  It is an insult to every generation that came to this country before 1960 that certain political action groups think that these new immigrants should be given everything from easy citizenship  to automatic jobs when they enter this country.

On a personal note, every new person I see at the Federal level in my line of work is a freaking immigrant.  I can\'t even understand them half the time and the Federal Government is handing them jobs!?!?!?!

English should be our national language and if you "want" to learn or speak something different that is fine, but you will know the native language.

Sir Mistiq, before you try and portray the Spaniards as being the ambassadors of human rights during the era of colonialism, this might be a good time for you review how the Spanish - Cortez, Coronado  and company treated the Native Americans they came across.  They stole their land, their gold and basically committed genocide on the indian tribes that inhabited Central and South America...

I would like to learn spanish for fun, but I suspect I wouldn\'t have enough opportunity to become good at it.  I have no interest in watching peliculas on telemundo, or saying "hola" to the checkout girl at the convenience market.  Actually I wouldn\'t mind learning Chinese so I could meet some more FOB honeys.

At work I need to use nothing but english.

I never intended to do that. I know what they did. Those damn Europeans.

Anyways, I completely agree with you guys that the Spanish speaking people should learn English. But unlike Japanese, Spanish is a more broad language. Asians have to learn English b/c very few people outside their race knows this language. But honestly, if you can\'t talk to 90% of the people at walmart...who is at the disadvantage, the stubborns white guy, or the stubborn people that don\'t know English?
Don\'t try to confuse me with what you call  facts, my mind is already made up.

I pretty much have no tolerance for people that are here yet can\'t speak english.  If you can\'t learn a countries native language when living there then I don\'t know what to tell you.

The only person I care to speak with at Walmart is the chick ringing me up.  If she can\'t speak english then she shouldn\'t be working at a customer service position.

If you are insinuating that I should learn Spanish so I can speak to the customers at Walmart, well..  Um... Anyone who takes a foreign language at school to work customer service at Walmart should be shot.

Ermm… I think I can contribute a little to this Topic, pretty interesting BTW.

Of course, Spanish is becoming more and more important everyday. Just notice that the order of languages in the world according to number of speakers is:

1)Chinese
2)English
3)Spanish

What that means? Chinese is spoken by a lot of people, much more than English and Spanish, but it’s actually an unknown language outside Chine. Chine is a rather important country in terms of population and economy, but of “little importance in the international scene”.

English and Spanish on the other hand are widely spread over large territories on the earth. Many countries share both languages which makes an important point when you are able to speak both of them.

I can speak Spanish, but also English. I will never speak English such a native speaker, but they will never do so with the Spanish. That’s natural. Speaking these two languages will open you many doors, many job offers. Nowadays, English is over Spanish in terms of prominence. That’s crystal clear. But Spanish is now quite important in USA, day by day there are more Spanish speakers there. I few time, south USA will have an important number of Spanish, which will carry benefits to those who are able to speak both languages.

I must agree in the opinion that you should learn the native language you’re living in. You’re not forced, of course, but ethically speaking you may do it.

And GigaShadow, what’s the difference between the spanish colonizers taking the control of America in 15th and 16 century and you americans in Irak? I cannot see any difference: both are pathetic.

Merry Christmas
