Also being poor and white in this country is worse than being poor and black.
Neither situation is good but it is arguable that one is "worse" than the other.

If they weren\'t sold to European traders by other Africans in the first place there would have been no slaves in the US now would there?
While it is true that Africans sold most of the slaves to trans-atlantic slave traders they did not sell all of them. Europeans and Americans did conduct some raids. So even if Africans did not sell other Africans, slavery would have continued because the demand for workers would have driven traders to capture the slaves themselves.
One thing that is worth mentioning is that western(US/Europe) slavery and eastern(Africa/Middle East) slavery were DRASTICALLY different. Western slaves were, in essence, cattle. They had no rights whatsoever and very few(if any) had the ability to transcend their situation. Eastern slavery was different in that slaves were workers who could work their way out of slavery and become land owners in their own right. They were not looked upon as subhumans before, during, or after their time as slaves.
BTW, I\'m pretty sure you are not but for clarification are you justifying slavery by saying other Africans participated?

Give me an example on how this "large-scale institutionalized discrimination" holds you back and how whites make it possible.
Do you not consider segregation "large-scale institutionalized discrimination"? Segregation was probably still in affect during many of our parents\' lives.
The government made it legal for a large portion of the country to be treated as second class citizens. To say that just because these laws are no longer in effect that everything is fine and dandy is to turn a blind eye to the truth. You can\'t really believe that 200+ years of looking at one group of people as less than human can really be turned around completely in 50 years.
We are much better off, as a country, than we were even 30 years ago; but it is going to take time for us to put racism behind us completely.

For the record whites have suffered throughout history as well - study feudal Europe and look up the meaning of a serf. Unless you were royalty - which 95 percent of us weren\'t you were a slave. Every culture has suffered indiginities at the hands of their own society or anothers.
While "technically" the same as slaves it was more of a class system. You were upper class or you were a serf. Serfs were able to force an
entirely new social system to force themselves out of servitude. Still, feudalism was 600+ years ago, that is a hell of a lot of time to get back on your feet.
