The division in this country has become too great IMO. I am not going to gloat or go into any I told you so\'s. It was a tough campaign and I respect each candidate for the effort they put in. I wish to also apologize to anyone I have offended with my partisan posts and specifically to Coredweller for labeling him as hating America. I made the comment towards the end of the election when things were really heating up and I did not think the comment through. He, least of all deserved the label that I pinned on him... so I formally apologize Core.
Apology accepted. Enough said about that.
It\'s going to take me a while to digest the results of this election and draw conclusions from it. A couple things have come to mind however:
These results may demolish the theory that has been generally accepted among progressives that there is some great untapped source of liberal support among people who don\'t vote. I\'ve heard it said that there are masses of poor, disenfranchised, and disillusioned middle and lower class people in this country who would vote liberal if they thought voting made any difference. Now we see the highest voter turnout in 30 years, along with the most offensive Republican incumbent as a target, and still the liberal side can only muster a little less than half the electorate. In addition, some of the support that went to Kerry will no doubt drift away when they see that their vote had no effect.
We do seem to be a bitterly divided nation, but I\'m asking myself what kind of a candidate it would take to bring about one of those landslide victories from the old days. It would definitely help for both parties to play against their stereotype in selecting their next nominee. If the Republicans nominated a thoughtful, intellectual easterner, or if the Democrats nominated another charismatic southern populist of modest origins (ala clinton), we might see more of a more crushing and decisive victory next time. Instead we had the republican "good old boy hick" versus the democratic "eastern elitest." Of course the Republican party will probably see this as a validation of their strategy and look for another good old boy next time around.
