Making a PS3 site, who\'s interested.
« on: November 07, 2004, 10:17:56 PM »
I\'m going to buy some webspace and make a PS3 site, I know it probably won\'t be released until Christmas of next year, but E3 will be PS3\'s debute & the PS2 and PSP will also most definatly play a very big role on the site and will stay that way until the PS3 finally debutes and the ball gets rolling.

The only thing stopping me right now is my lack of web site knowledge, But that where you fellow members come in.

Lets all put our ideas and opinions in a pot, stir it all up and see what we can all come up with!

Here are my basic plans as of now:

1.Site will be PSP, PS2, and PS3 oriented.

2.Site will consist of cheats, reviews, Etc.

3. Site will have a forum and will play a big role up until the actual release of the PS3. I will have a link to these forums on the site and wish I could take these forums under my arm but I doubt it\'ll happen so I will have a PS3 forum consisting of many of the catagories here with a few new ones. Media & images, blog, PS3, PSP and whatever else I can think of or anyone else recommends.

4. Staff will consist of PSx2central volunteers that are very serious about this project, without your help this site will not exist.

5. this is where your opinions and comments come into play.

From what I can think of, we will need a staff consisting of web designer, I am very skilled with imaging so I can make the banners and all other images for the site BUT that doesnt mean people can\'t make thier own designs and images. As of now this site doesnt even have a face or layout, anything goes.

Reviewers, all members of the forums are open to make reviews "non bias reviews as hard as it will be" of games. This way we can all contribute AND all be a part of this site AND have a very large review section.

HTML gurus. this is the difficult part, I have some knowledge in HTML and will start designing the site myself but if I need help it would be great to have someone that is willing to code. The site won\'t be flawless in appearance at first but will change and improve over time.

Thats all I can think of right now.

Ok now it\'s your guys turn to speak.

Let the planning begin! :D.

(1) Do you know how many members have tried the exact same thing as you? One too many. Infact, our own Aaron, who writes for other minor sites had the same idea and he couldn\'t find help. What makes you think you will have better luck?

(2) You say yourself you have a lack HTML knowledge, which is basic. How exactly do you plan on doing this site then?  You want to milk someone for their knowledge? Why would anyone do this? And while we are on the subject of the site design, what makes you think a simple HTML page will work now\'a\'days? There are so many other options, such as Flash and Javascript that need to be implemented into the site design, otherwise it will come off stale and boring.

(3) Why would someone go to this site when there are plenty of other sites? What makes this site special? Nothing. Even if you get a nice staff, you come up with the problem that game reviews will rely on the staff actually purchasing the games and then finishing them. There is no way the staff will want to buy the next 3DO game, just so your site can have a review of it.

There are so many problems that come with starting a website up and the problems only compound with a lack of knowledge and the fact you want to base the site off something that is already very well covered on the \'net. If you do decide to go ahead and do this site, then you need to look into some sort of ASP form to update it. I use to help run Segadome.com and believe me, if you get a staff together the only way to actually keep a site in decent shape and updated is with some sort of form that updates the page, otherwise the burden of updating will come all the way back to you, the webmaster.

Id help, but if you dont even know HTML thru and thru, I wouldnt bother.  You would really need a stron background of PHP to make a site like that work PROPERLY.  You could do it using only HTML, but Id hate to update that page manually.

I just think we shold rebuild THIS site.  Maybe get some fresh blood that way.

Anyone remember fgn, fastest game news, run by IGN?  It had a main page that was updated with news twice a day I believe, maybe it was as the news happened, I don\'t recall.  I don\'t think it had reviews or even preview writeups, just news and screenshots.  Anyway, I miss its\' simplicity.

you had little motivation to work with

What LIC said is all so true though.  The problem with noobies wanting to build a site, and considering the site that unknown wants to build, is that they dont really understand the amount of work that needs to be done to get a site like that running.  You cant pull it off now adays with knowing only a LITTLE HTIML.  I found what LIC said to be more of the things someone really needs to think about before even trying to build a site.

Unknown, learn the basics of html then start playing around with CSS(style sheets) and Javascript.  Flash is trash, imho, but it\'s really easy to learn and implement into a site.

I don\'t know anything about PHP but I\'ve come to learn it would be very beneficial to know.  Check out php nuke like someone mentioned.  I believe it\'s free, or very cheap anyway, to download...and if you feel like spending money you can buy templates ready to go.  Check it out ------> http://www.phpnuke.org

Dude!  flash is trash?  of all things said stupid, this is very high on the list.  What other alternative do you suggest that would replace flash?

if your going to give advice, get your facts straight first.

I wouldn\'t mind writing for the site at all... So if you need writers in any way, shape, or form I\'m definitely interested.
