Rumors on Xbox 360...

Not everyone has to wait around to hear details of Microsoft’s sexy new Xbox 360—and now, thanks to Kotaku, neither do you. An exclusive Kotaku source has revealed a bevy of facts about the next-generation console set to rock the Xbox world.

The original Xbox was a manly chunk of square black-and-green plastic meant to win over a generation of hardcore male gamers. The Xbox 360° will be about winning over gamers of all persuasions, with a customizable look and a kindler, gentler Circle of Light marketing campaign.

Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device will also be able to stand upright or on it’s side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off. The 360°s dashboard will also be customizable, making each console a thing totally unique to its owner.

Some of the inner workings of the 360° have also been confirmed. The device will feature high definition audio and video and wireless controllers, and will come in two flavors—one with a hard drive and one without. The biggest shock is that while Microsoft wants to make their 360° backwards compatible, they haven’t yet been able to pull it off.

“They’re working on it,” said our source.

I wasn’t able to get any pictures of the 360°, but Gizmodo’s Joel was kind enough to do a mock-up of it’s face plate for us.

Stay tuned for more next-generation revelations.

They couldn\'t get a picture but here\'s a mock-up...

meh...so far I\'m underwhelmed by the rumored name, though it has grown on me a bit over the past week or two since I heard it.  The mock-up looks kinda of boring, imo.

I\'m still curious as to how the whole choice of HD or not is going to play out.  I think the HD should be standard to allow developers to take advantage of it...

The article says high defintion video  as well as audio is there.  PCs have been playing in higher-than HD resolutions, no reason why the next generation consoles should be sticking with crummy NTSC, other than a compatibility mode for Redneck Jones.

I\'m really hoping it is backwards compatible, 2005 has an amazing line-up of Xbox games, imo, that I\'ll be catching up on well into next year.

no backward compatibility is freaking huge.  I guess they are just assuming people are going to want to keep the clunky piece of shit X-Box around just to play old stuff.

Then why make a sleak looking new one if that\'s the case?

I didnt know people were making such a big deal out of backwards compatibility these days. It wasnt anything huge before ps2 but i can see why people would preffer it.

Im not too thrilled by that mock up either. Its very bland, but i do like the fact that all the controllers are wireless. Only problems are batteries and battery life. Since rumble packs or w/e are standardly internal i cant imagine the batteries lasting forever.

I toyed with that thought but:

...didn\'t make sense to me.  But you\'re probably right in this case, as you always are, master.

Ditto.

It works maybe a little better for Game Boy, but on consoles we buy a new one to have new games...

I play a decent amount of ps games and i enjoy the convenience of not having to drag around my ps and cables just to play them. Plus the ps2 memory card is a great place to store extra, unused ps saves.

While i dont need it, It would be a nice addition. Especially if i could play ps1,2&3 games. That would just be incredible.

I play many PS1 games on my PS2, to name a few...

Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Streetfighter
Galerians
*FFVII, VIII, IX*
MGS

and it can go on. If the X Box isn\'t backward compatable then they\'re gonna be in  trouble.

"sweeps and curves"

Are you insane! I love her character, she stays.

and how does that work....  You\'re a bicycle..
