Good news for future owners of the $499 PS3. :thumb:

http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/22/studios-wont-downgrade-hd-video-for-now/

Quote
If you\'ve been holding off on ordering (or pre-ordering) an HD DVD or Blu-ray player because you\'re worried about Hollywood studios potentially using the Image Constraint Token to downgrade video quality displayed via analog outputs, you can cross that concern off of your list -- at least for the next four years. Though there\'s no official word, the major studios have apparently cut a backroom deal to keep their HD discs ICT-free until at least 2010. The move would allow owners of analog HD sets -- not to mention gamers who pick up Microsoft\'s Xbox 360 HD DVD drive or Sony\'s non-HDMI junior Playstation 3 -- to watch their discs in full HD format, rather than being forced to endure downgrades to 540p.

$499 does not look that retarded anymore. 720p/1080p in games and movies.

the games were never a problem.  it\'s the movies.

So what will the $499 peeps do when 2010 rolls around and their new favorite movie OMG-I-MUST-OWN-IT comes out?  So much for future proof.  Oh well, enjoy it while you can.

by that time blu-ray players won\'t cost that much anymore, so no problem I guess.

I heard that PS3 support 1080p output for the analog connection too, which should fine for buyers that are planning on getting $500 version.

Riku,

honestly in my opinion, I doubt ICT will ever be implement on the majority of either HD-DVD or Blu Ray discs because seriously, who here are going to make copy of High def video in analog connection?

Very rarely will you see a high def analog input connection for recording on consumer video recorder.

Look at dvd recorder, you do see composite and s-video input and output, and a component video output, but no component video input.  Some better one have firewire connection, which is a digital connection...

And where are you going to record that analog connection to?  VHS VCR?  VHS is low resolution of 240 x 480i i think, and they don\'t have component video input or output for that matter.

Because of those facts, studios were open minded about it and doesn\'t have to worry and so they decided not to implement ICT on HD video discs.

its the digital connection where they are a lot more concern, and hence they have serious copy protection like HDCP, AACS to prevent you from making perfect copy off the disc from blu ray writer, and from a digital connection...

I\'m sure there will be alot of pressure from consumers to NOT implement ICT for this generation of media formats.  I just find it funny that Sony\'s shouting future proof when ICT is a somewhat probable scenario, and only a few years from now.

I am very convince ICT will not be implemented at all for nearly all the Blu Ray/HD-DVD discs because they know that pretty much nobody will bother recording High Definition Video in "high def" analog input connection because high def analog input almost don\'t exist.

So, in my opinion which I believe was the case months ago was that ICT will never be implemented in the future, even to the time next generation optical disc that will replace blu ray in about 10 years from now...

I also doubt ICT will ever be used now.

Riku, I think you\'re going a bit overboard with your anti-PS3 (Or rather, anti-PS3-fanboy) shenanigans.

rikku u can sometimes help balance the fanboyism factor here but now you\'re just going overboard.

Ok it\'s 2010.  Terminator 2 Extreme Super Ultimate Edition with triple enhanced zuber-buffering is just released with the ICT flag.  A Sony standalone blu-ray player is $80.  A PS3 with HDMI output is in the $100-$200 range.

oh n0es!!!  What to do!? :fighting:

"Enjoy it while you can."  4+ years is a helluva long time for your primary media player to last.

I never said 10 years ?_?

Hell you can buy a PC faster than the PS3 within a few months of its release.
