^^ Well, MM shares his thoughts on console launches by illustrating how different it was, back in the oldschool days.

Then you quoted him and you asked why & how HANDHELD gaming and PC gaming differ from eachother....

I\'m sorry but, within context of the convo, your question did lack some coherence.

No I ment how todays PC and/or handheld gaming are any different to todays console gaming in terms of how they have evolved from the past.

Yeah ok, but can you understand why your sentence wasn\'t clear to any of us ?

You could have simply replied : "how did the evolution of pc gaming and the evolution of handheld gaming differ from the evolution of console gaming ?"

Aside from rephrasing, I think the question is also missing the point a bit, since we were solely discussing the console formats and their respective launches.

( ..and i don\'t want to be some grammar nazi, but it\'s \'meant\' instead of \'ment\'. )

^ I would disagree. Technically, pcgaming and console gaming are getting closer together. However, the genre gap is there to stay. I would even dare to say it is increasing, polarizing more and more.

PC gaming : mouse + keyboard ; first person shooters & RTS

Console gaming : mostly dual analogue stick + motion sensing (wii mote) ; 3rd person action & arcade games and alot more oddball genres you\'d never find on the pc.

Don’t you think, with a hdd and it’s usb ports PS3 is just an OS away from eliminating that genre gap entirely?

^ In a way... Sony\'s PS3 strategy is indeed about the PS3 as media centre.

I think if it were up to Sony, the PC would only act as hub and business/work platform. Looking at their strategy from that angle one might state they are trying to overlap Window\'s Media Center with PS3.

Yeah I understand. I wanted to be as brief as possible so it ended up kind of ambiguous. But a little thought on it would have given a clue.

Anyways, the reason I posted this, is because mm rants about console gaming and comparatively to PC he prefers it (PC gaming that is) as if it doesnt suffer from similar changes, so I see no point in his post if its just an excuse to rant. And you know how much mm loves to rant. Credit should go where it is due

Besides, gaming industry has grown thus changed in these respects inevitably. I dont think any of us would prefer going back in time to play Atari games forever just because there was no internet, gaming community, and could get games for $2 when the small gaming industry of that time crashed(that was a good thing?). And to tell the truth I love the fact that I can play games like ZOE2, or DMC which were impossible 20 years ago despite the changes.

Yes and if they succeed there the business/work platform is right around the corner. It reminds me again of Ken Kuitigari\'s visionary speech from about five years ago where one of the things he pointed out was is it makes better business sense to supply chips to console makers rather than being a console manufacturer, or words to that effect.

Holy shit, is that true?

That\'s Xbox-controller-big.

If that\'s too wide it won\'t fit in my equipment cabinet, heh. I think I have a lot of space next to the 360, though.

S\'pose the new-fangled Blu Ray drive takes up the space?

The pic was posted on joystiq, however, it\'s not a real PS3 but a fan-made model based on best available info.  As long as it\'s not wider than a standard stereo component (amp/cd/dvd) and fits in a standard cabinet, I\'m fine with it, since it has the POWER SUPPLY (read brick the size of missing space) built in.

I cannot understand the PSU decision. Engineering logic ( which i don\'t even have much ) states the opposite of putting the PSU in the casing.

Not a smart move, Sony...

From a heat/energy standpoint, it makes sense to keep the PSU outside of the box, away from everything.  From a design/sales standpoint.... well, look at the backlash that was caused by the 360 brick, apparantly it pisses people off to have powersupplies around on the floor behind their AV cabinets.

"From a heat/energy standpoint" = core primary problem @ a fixated state

"it pisses people off to have powersupplies" = secondary \'problem\'

I wonder how quickly, PSthree will see day of light.

I remember hearing reports that it was initially having heat issues, but the massive amount of ventilation added to it was able to overcome.  We\'ll see, there\'s nothing more irritating than heat issues causing crashes and problems.  Again, a lesson learned from the Xbox.

As long as they made sure that form followed function, and there really are no issues with heat, then it\'s nice to have the PS built in, although I never really cared too much that the PS was separate on 360, it\'s something I could live with, but many others didn\'t like.
