Add-ons spell doome for PS2?
« on: December 16, 2000, 09:01:15 AM »
I have been thinking lately (hurray...). This is what happened with Sega\'s machine :
hey, let\'s add a CD-player!! £195
And the fun doesn\'t stop there! Let\'s add a device that makes it 32-bit instead! Wehaw! Only £125!!!
And we all know what happened with the Mega CD...
On the game box it will say "to play this super game you need to buy this... and this..".
It doesn\'t work that way. All you get is frustration that you don\'t have the right tools, and you guessed right, no games sold.
So what about PS2?
Well, we know that the harddrive will add about 300 megs of extra texture-storage. Sounds sweet, but it\'s gonna be expensive.
Hey let\'s go online! Nah, that\'s not possible until you buy this new modem adaptor!!

So where will it end? ie."To play Quake 4 Tournament you have to have the new PS2 HDD to take full advantege of all textures. AND IT DOESN\'T STOP THERE!! If you want to go online, you will need the hyper-new Sony modem to make that possible!!"

Let\'s all hope that the add-ons will be very cheap and that there will people buying them...:(

Of course they want, but I was talking about the horror-vision that nobody would buy them.

But I have heard that Sony makes sure that the dev. know how to operate the HDD before launching it.

Sony knows darn well what happened to Sega and all the other companies who released add-ons and they don\'t want to go the same way. They\'re learning from other people\'s mistakes are being smart about these add-ons. Trust me.

Hey, even if it does bomb, I\'ll still buy it.

You pay to get technology first, P3\'s are much cheaper now then 1 year ago, but I could have waited and saved money but I did not

Don\'t worry
its chance of failure is less likely then Al Gore winning the election

There is too much support, too many consoles out, and too many games in planning for it to even come close to failing

\'Kay... Let\'s all hope for that.

Until then...

to close my eyes and realise there is nothing there but light
I need shadow I need darkness to help me trough the night.

Are they actually going to use the HDD for extra texture storage?

I thought it was going to be for stuff like downloading movies and stuff.

The harddrive and broadband adapter are allone unit so if you play online games you automatically get the best of both worlds. and Developers can make there online games capable of taking advantage of the HD benefit

Also SOny will most likely make a sweetheart deal to get these products into our PS2\'s and I wouldn\'t be  surprised to see SOny automatically include these in a future model of the PS2

Sony knows the history of add-ons, ths WILL be different

I got a "Q" here. Ummm...the broadband here, that is for the connection of DSL and/or cable right? There will not be any 56k **** there on the broadband, huh? I hope not...
