One Sentence Answers - Will Playstation 2 win the console war and why/why not ?

Were debating weather the PS2 will come out on top, apprently it will.  AVG5, I disagree with you, no system even matched up to the PS2\'s hype.  For a while DC had that "it\'s thinking" or whatever, but now console ads are slim to none, and well, it just won\'t make it to the top again.  Don\'t get me wrong, it\'s a great system with great games, but the fans have been swong by Sony because Sony has mastered everything in the technological world.  DC will destroy X-Box though.  PS2, has everything going for it, third parties make a strong impression on a system, apparently you haven\'t noticed.  There\'s nothing wrong with DC, it\'s not going to last as long as PS2 will.  I think by the end of 2002, we\'ll be hearing news about a new Sega system... just my opinion.

TheOneBillyGunn, I here what you are saying but I\'m going to have to disagree.  I think DC will survive for some time to come.  As far as PS2 goes, I think it will do well but it will not have the huge market dominance the PS1 had.  And again, I think the XBox will cause a huge splash.  It has an impressive amount of announced developers and it will eventually have almost every developer working for it that PS2 has.  The powerful 250 Mhz NV2A GPU and the Hard Drive will make this baby hard to resist.  With such huge developer support (strong rumors of Squaresoft and EA is already on board) and the 500 million dollar marketing campaign, there is no way, IMO, that XBox will fail (unless if MS tries to launch the system at $599.99).

I can\'t yet say will PS2 win or not, but I gotta say that time between the PS2\'s launch and the launch of Xbox and NGC doesn\'t count because if you\'re a Nintendo or Microsoft fan year is nothing to wait; and due to lack of PS2\'s in the markets it\'s up to you to make the decision

AVG25, a lot of people will abandon the Xbox because they think it\'s a PC port machine, A LOT.  Microsoft\'s bad reputation come into play as well.....
This console war is gonna be basically between the PS2 and the Gamecube and PS2 is gonna come out on top because of major hype lotsa developers, and because it will probably have a pretty nice library before the Gamecube is released.

Yes PS2 will win....has DVD playback, can play both PSOne and PS2 games and a million players already have PSOne so they have that advantage over the Xbox and GameCube is geared toward a different age group.

PS2 is getting strong backup because PSone is an ad. that stays and still sells. It advertizes PS2 on its own; PS2 has large fan and user-base and ppl don\'t really care about little jaggie here and there if it comes down to games.

But I said nothing about PS2 winning the war... it just has strong possibilities to do so.

You can\'t have pictures of the Xbox controller. It hasn\'t been displayed yet. Only mock-ups and fake pictures.

 Yes, PS2 will win and the reason is public opinion.

Ps2, Xbox, & Gamecube all have a good chance of becoming #1, its too early to tell right now.

Maybe ChocoboSquared, a LOT of people will abandon the XBox, but I highly doubt it.  I think in Fall 2001 people will be ready for something new and that means great news for Nintendo and Microsoft.  There are so many developers flocking to XBox it\'s not even funny.  Plus, XBox has a huge amount of PC developer support who will make exclusive content for the XBox.  E3 2001 will be a great time for videogames.  Sega, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft will show there guns.

I\'ve been reading your replies to this post and I discovered you only talk about games. The electronic industry will NOT settle for a gaming console only, but nowadays it demands more.. The through nature of the console should be a central upgradeable unit which can provide Entertainment like playing games, home cinema, but also more serious tasks as running Office Suits... Electronic agenda\'s, Email&WAP applications like GroupWise, Multiple Operating System support. The whole concept of 1 console doing various tasks at the same time was the true concept of the Playstation, but Sony could never calculate so much dissapointments at the some time.. Incompatible software due to bad and Louzy programming which is entirely the responsibility of the Game design industry. Nor the lack of the materials needed the build the console which causes too much delays on the market. The only way out now is start rapidly deploying some other projects like Connectivity to the net, and work around the demands of the E-Commerce. This war could only be won when the REAL supporters of this console would help making this product more serious instead of whinning and complaining when the new version of Tekken will be released.....

Good theory. Problem is, alot of people don\'t want all these extras. Home computers are the normal now. Why do you need a game system that does these things? Not to mention, it is that, a GAME SYSTEM. Not a home computer. People who buy it, buy it for games. Not for running an office suit.

 Sony is not the first to try and make a "computer entertainment system". Trip Hawkins did it with his 3D0 idea. It didn\'t work. The people wanted games. Not PHOTOCDS or whatever.

If you want something to run MS OFFICE or whatever, buy a computer. Not a game system. You may as well expect your VCR or DVD player to start running complex applications and such.
