RPG sequel question
« on: February 14, 2001, 10:42:18 PM »
My question is....
If you could have any sequel to any RPG FROM ANOTHER CONSOLE which RPG would you pick and why.
My personal choice would be shining force.
I think this is the most overlooked series ever to grace a console.
Its story was good, but the gameplay was awesome.
You could get like 30 characters, each with different abilities and advantages.
Shining force 2 was even better because of its odd promotion angle.
Whatever happened to promotions in RPG\'s anyway.
I thought it was one of the coolest things about them.

ummm to me i want another sequel to secret of mana

i mean the game was awesome - it had everything all the way to multiplayer action, but i would not want it to be in 3d i would want it to remain with 2d graphics - just would make me feel better whe playing it - that and i don\'t like 3d action rpgs they are no fun - just like a action adventure title instead of a action rpg

well thats my most wanted sequel or game - another chrono sequel wouldn\'t hurt eiter or xenogears

ahhh so many great old rpgs

This one is easy.  I would love to see Skies of Arcadia on another powerful platform.  The game was very well done already, imagine what it would look like on Gamecube or X-box?

I\'d love to see remakes of the old final fantasies ( especially I, II and III ), or a sequel to Secret of Mana; one of the greatest RPG\'s on Super Nintendo :)

I\'m also eager to see the new zelda game on Gamecube.

A remake of Chrono-trigger for PS2 would be also very cool.

I hate PC games, I just don\'t see the PC as a game machine.

The PS2, why did I leave that one out?

I really don\'t have a good reason.  I would say because of what I\'ve already seen the PS2 do in terms of RPGs hasn\'t been the best.  But that wouldn\'t be fair.  I haven\'t seen Gamecube or X-box enough to draw a conslusion as to why it would be better. Sorry.

RPGs do take time if they are to be stellar.

Let me correct it then.  I would love to see a skies sequel on PS2, Gamecube, or X-box.

I corrected it though dammit!!

Besides, I had forgotten how long it took before the good RPGs came out for DC.  Almost 2 years!!

Yea you have to give the developers some time

because it takes years of development to prepare afreat game like FFIX and such

they were already in development for FFIX before they even finished FFVIII - so soon when the RPGs start coming on over from Japan then we will see some gems and some dirt as to speak lightly

lets hope for the gems though

remember that SEGA could do a Shen Mue 2 version for our PS2... it´s a rumour but can be. Sega knows she could do a lot of money among 10 millions PS2 users... jejejj I think we can play Shen Mue X in the black ;)

Even though it\'s not a console game, I\'d choose the Quest for Glory series. It was designed by a husband & wife team of AD&Daholics.. and it shows. There\'s a great level of freedom to do what you want in the game. Your skills and attributes are raised by when and how often you use them.. not by raising levels after a set amount of XP is gained. So say, if you don\'t like tedious excercising, you don\'t have to do it.. just don\'t be surprised when you tire out real quick while fighting or running from monsters. If you don\'t practice climbing trees, don\'t expect to be able shimmy right up an oak to get a needed item. You\'ll either have to practice or find another way of getting it.. like say throwing a rock at the item. (Provided you\'re good at throwing) In that way, you have to change your gameplay style to suit how you develop your character. The designers also never felt the need to put any dialoge for your hero into the game.. expecially since the hero is supposed to be YOUR character. To have someone else put words in his mouth would break the bond you form with your character.

Then there\'s the fact that most of the games take place in settings not common to todays RPG\'s. I mean, when was the last time you played an RPG that took place in an African setting? An Ancient Greek setting? Slavic(Translyvanian)?? I think it\'s a great change of pace from the "Traditional" and "Futuristic" settings found in Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, and their clones.

Example:

I also love the idea of saving your hero off at the end of one game and then importing him for use in later sequels. It would take perfect advantage of the PSX/PS2\'s memory cards and add quite a bit of depth to the RPG genre. Hell, if more games used this feature, there could even be online mini-games set up where you can challenge the characters other people from across the world have built up to duels, wizard battles, and Theiving contests.

PRAISE THE LORD!
I didnt think anyone else liked the Quest For Glory series.
I thought it was one of the most WELL done set of series ever.
The storylines in all of them are cool, the combat is fun, and the games are funny.
The best game of all time.
I always thought that they would make a good Console translation.
Number 3 was my favorite(the african one).
I mean this is one of the only games I\'ve played where you can die of starvation, and its not anal.
My best method was to get a Thief in the first game since they started with everything but magic and parry and then use my extra points to assign him magic and parry, then I had a character that could do everything.
Paladins were fun.
Especially in the 4th game.
You got to do so much cool stuff as a Paladin in the 4th game.
By the time I got to the 4th game, my character was a beast.
For those who havent played it, its like Kings Quest mixed with D&D.
Its great fun.

P.S. Sonyfan, is part 5 any good, I have never played it, and hae we talked about this in the past.
I recall talking about this with someone on this board.

Damn, and I thought I was the only QFG freak here. I\'m surprised there aren\'t more fans around.. I see people posting about the series in other forums all the time.. it seems to have gotten quite a cult following. My favorite character has got to be the Theif/Mage. There\'s just something about that particular mix of attributes that exudes coolness.

QFG III was good, but pretty buggy.. and the combat was the worst of the series. It\'s still my second favorite though, (QFGII being my top choice) because the atmosphere really pulls you in and the puzzles are very intuitive. Plus there\'s a lot of good morals spread throughout the game.. like the meaning of friendship and doing what\'s right even if you have to break the law to do it. Well, and then there\'s Salim the Hippy Apothacary. Ever try to take one too many hits off of his Hooka? It\'s funny, but remember to save your game first.
;)

Personally, I\'d like to see all the old Sierra classics make a transition to the next generation consoles.. but QFG in particular. It has so much to gain from a RPG frenzied market, and it has just enough real-time battles to keep even the more action oriented crowd pleased. (Although battles are almost entirely optional). It just came too early in the PC\'s life and was too far ahead of it\'s time.  :(

QFG5 was a great game, but it didn\'t live up to the series IMO. The humor was somewhat bland, the characters too stereotyped, and the battles were frustrating at best. Then again.. QFG5 was made to appeal to more mass markets so you have to expect some change. It\'s a must have if you\'re a fan of the series though, since a lot of loose ends are tied up and your character finally get\'s a chance to retire (If he want\'s to). The music is excellent.. some of the best ever in a video game. In fact, it even inspired whoever is in charge of the Grammys to create a special award just for game music. (I don\'t know if the category has been approved yet, though) I guess the thing that REALLY bothered me the most about it was that you only use two icons. In the other games you can type in what you want to say or do (Which adds a lot more depth and character builing oppertunities), or choose from a wide array of different action icons in the SCI VGA games (Part 3,4, and 1 Remake). Oh well.. I say pick it up anyhow. It\'s only 20 bucks at most retail stores and well worth that even for non-fans of the series.

PS.. Since it sounds like you like Theives, let me offer a bit of advice for building up some skills. Pick Your Nose. ;)

Yeah.
But cant you kill yourself if you pick your nose too much?
Taking too many hits on the Hooka is cool.
I love part 2 for the things you can do as a mage or fighter.
Like if your a Mage you can take that test which is cool.
And if your a fighter you can join the union.
We should start a petetion to get them translated.
I thought part 4 had the coolest characters. Like those three guys in the Inn, one was Jack Nicholason.
