Metal Gear Solid 4: The first review is out!
« Reply #150 on: June 19, 2008, 05:28:23 AM »
It arrived today and I am astonished by the quality of the game.

There is a lot of gameplay here! Much more than any other MGS probably.

I ve started the game at the highest difficulty setting and I must say that the AI is very tough!

There are tons of ways to approach the gameplay! You can literally experiment with the game.

Btw I must say that the attention to detail is brilliant too. I love how you can change channels when you start a new game. In one of them there was a show interviewing David Hayter in the future. Unbelievable

There is certainly a post-modern touch in it and an almost post-apocalyptic feel.

The game itself seems to touch reality in a unique way. This could have been a novel that approached the real world with a twist.

love this game. pretty much have the controls down. i still can\'t really justify spending 500 bucks on one game (dont see myself buying anything other than resistance and resistance 2 in the near future), but im still glad i bought the system just to experience this game.

*really minor spoiler*..not even..but its mgs4 and people want to see stuff for the first time as they progress. Im like 1/3ish (no idea how far) into act 4

Anyone else find it near impossible to avoid getting detected by those little unmanned, three-legged sentries? the first time in the hanger i avoided them for a little while, then ran right in a room where a bunch of them were in a blindspot so i just blasted them all. Then again a little later in the chapter i can get around the room, but to get to the door i need to get to is impossible. iv only tried once so far but i took so damn long and still screwed it up

edit: has anyone tried MGS online? i only skimmed it when i was updating, then i never got my email to confirm my account..did i read it right that there\'s a monthly fee to play? if thats the case im probably going to pass on it for a while unless everyone thinks its good enough for the payment

Got a chance to play it over at my brother\'s house, for whatever reason i just couldn\'t get into it.  The tv channels in the beginning bugged the shit out of me, the gameplay doesn\'t feel like its really made that much of a leap from MGS3 and christ, a hairless monkey with a leather diaper? really?

I\'m sure the gameplay picks up and its probably fun to play, but my first impression was not the best.
Wrong. There are two other people who can.

You have to play it yourself at your own ease from the beginning. You also have to take the game as it is. If you werent a fan of the other games (MGS2 specifically) you probably wont like what this is trying to be. The game screams post-modernism and for that reason it is different and tries to go beyond being just a game. It is like trying to "invade" reality. For that reason some features (like the TV programs of a society that lives under war economy) may be loved by many and disliked by others.

There is definitely lots of gameplay improvement compared to MGS3. It is mostly noticeable at the hardest difficulty setting

btw it looked like leather in the original trailers. Didnt you notice it looked like metal in the final game? :)

I ve finished it some hours ago and I must say it is an amazing experience. Probably the best I ve ever had :)

This game is certainly unique and different than any other game out there.

But anyways, indeed I couldnt avoid those things either in many areas. The best way is to distract them by throwing magazines. They will all (or almost all) move to a certain direction to check it out.

Another way is to use Chaff grenades, but there werent any available in drebin\'s shop. I had two in my menu I didnt know where I got them from.

I didnt play Online yet on the final version but I played a lot the Beta version and it was a blast. First time I hear about the subscription fee. Where did you hear that?

I just finished the game last night.

I learned a valuable lesson: Bosses are stupid and will step on claymores. Especially Vamp and Crying Wolf.

Well, I now know I won\'t like it. I was giving serious thought to picking it up, until I read that. I mean, this is someone who hated MGS1 and MGS2.

Bummer. I was almost goin\' to buy the game, due to the whole killing an enemy and collecting his weapon aspect. I\'m a sucker for that stuff.

There\'s a whole lotta that. Fosho.

The cut scenes are long. The story kinda wonky. Gameplay is fantastic if your into the whole stealth/action hybrid, however.

I think I\'m about 75% done with it and so far have been really impressed. I hardly ever actually finish games but I\'m gonna finish this one.

So yeah LIC, judging from what you were saying before it came out, and now, this game probably isnt for you.

Can\'t you just go rent it and find out? Fuckin\' gamefly man. DO IT.

you play STALKER?

that dominated all other games i know of where you scavenge the ammo and guns of everyone you kill..plus the whole atmosphere is really cool.

i think the expansion comes out later this year

Thats the irony. You have one one hand this aspect which is one of the best implementations I ve ever seen in a war game and on the other hand it its got the elements that you hate.

I think (just as Luke has put it) rent is the best option for you but I bet you are going to hate the game if you dont tend to care about characters and plots in games regardless.

If you start skipping the cut scenes many things in the world will look like out of place: "What the fuck is this?" "Why on earth am I supposed to do this?" "Who on earth is that?" "When did that become a part of the picture?"

It is like taking a superhero movie and watch only the action portions of it. You are bound to either hate the movie or hate the character.

This game is aimed mostly for the fans and very open minded newcomers (just because they will dare spend the time trying to follow the plot).

Very open minded newcomers...why don\'t you just say "people who enjoy any game out there".
Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

It\'s worth it... even if you just get the 1 game at a time plan.
