22 years? Hasn\'t NASA enough money to change the shuttle at least every 10 years? That\'s a bestiality, even planes are considered old with 20 years.

I just read about it now, and already found stories telling of possible terrorist attacks.

Wasn\'t this the shuttle flight with the Isreali pilot?

Adan the U.S. space program has been just scraping by for years. They get just enough to keep going and not much more.Pretty sad when you think of how highly our generation will be thought of when history looks back at the beginings of space exploation.

Shuttles don\'t make flights every day like planes though Adan. In fact they will be left unused for years between missions.

I just woke up and heard of it. It doesn\'t suprise me. Those shuttles are almost 25 years old with little upgrades. They needed new space ships. I am just praying for the families of the astronauts. This indeed is a tragedy.

I\'ve seen the video and there\'s no doubt the shuttle was too high and going to fast to be shot down by a shoulder fired missle, those things couldn\'teven hit a commercial airliner at cruising altitude.Anything else like a SAM shot from the back of a truck in the middle of Texas seems pretty unlikey.

the Columbia was over 23 years old. And  ben-high is right, it seems like a lot of money is spent on NASA, but I think we spent more sending N. Korea oil & food....

but its too early to tell

I don\'t think it was a terrorist attack. Altitude was too high for weapons. Accident, I think, is the most reasonable cause.

I also think it was wing damage on takeoff......as my previous post about the left wing stated.

I wonder what the hell could hit the wing at 612 kilometres of altitude.

a possible scenario is that on re-entry the damage to the wing produced a tremendous amount of drag,  ripped the wing off,  turned the shuttle sidways and it tore apart/exploded  sort of like that Hawaii airplane where one hole ripped the whole roof off of it

but im just speculating,  we probably won\'t know the answer for months

also I feel sorry for the people in Texas,  debris will be falling everywhere down there...
