anyway back on topic.

we just had a news report on Channel 5 here in the UK and they said ot could of been a fault with the black heat shield pannels on the underside of the shuttle.

now from what they said and i know this will sound Grim. they wouldn\'t of known what happend.

Structural failer could of been in seconds.

yeah i understand that buddy , but the shuttle disaster is High profile.

most people tend to ignore the everyday tragedy until it gets thrown in their face with a disaster on this scale.

I actually should apologize for being a difficult ass. I just sat in 35 minutes of traffic to travel less than a mile and almost got hit by another car.

well,  just more proof that this forum is full of hypocrites and 2 faces

back on the subject,  I heard that something could have gone with the autopilot that keeps the shuttle steady on re-entry which would have caused the shuttle to start rocking back and forth which would increasingly get worst.  That is another theory as to what could have gone wrong.

Also I remember a show about the shuttle that said 1 missing panel could be disaster....

I believe in the press conference NASA officials are having now, it was said the shuttle was under control and that didnt lead to the accident.

They were also reporting that the debris that fell off during launch struck the left wing, which is the same wing where the sensors died.

Once again they stress it is wayyy to early to tell though.

hate to say it, but this event isn\'t really deserving of 24hour news coverage on all networks.  True, some very intelligent people died in the voyage of human enlightenment, but like Sammy said, People die every year.  Cops are shot in the line of duty, military personel is killed, and inoccent bystanderds are murder all the time.

I can see showing a special segment on this event on news shows, but we all will be subjected to constant bombardment by the media for the next week, focusing on the space shuttle.

Personally I feel worse for those who are killed by suicide bombers, because at least the shuttle crew knew they were doing something dangerous and chose to do it.

Nonetheless, I feel bad for those involved in this, but I just get pissed at the news networks trying to cash in on this.  If I didn\'t know better, I would blame them for causing it just so they have a good story.

current estimates put a FULL investigation around the region of 5  to 6 months.

this includes exploring all possible theroys and fragment reteval.

if like in conventional Plane crashes, they would want to try to reconstuct the shuttle from parts they retreve, that way they can get a better picture of the actual stresses and strains that were exerted on Columbia.

well,  people are hardening themselves to the tragedies of this world.  violent entertainment etc hardens people.  I\'ve been harden a little too.

yeah, if people would have thought we\'d be in in the current position we are in right now (Iraq, terrorist, Korea, etc..), I\'m willing to bet most people would imagine nation wide hysteria.  However humans are an adaptable breed, and I guess that\'s the reason we\'ve survided as long as we have thus far.

If you were to consider all the stresses and strains the Shuttle has to go through a mission (From Launch to landing).. its pretty amazing that most of the Fleet is over 20 years old :eek:

I always thought they replaced them entirely after 5 or 10 years

I forget how often they overhaul them, but I read that they tear them down to a shell. They also retrofit new tech every so often as well.
