Metal Gear Solid 4: The first review is out!

Tell me about it. Now I am typing  with my tongue because I am in a straitjacket

I was near pulling my hair. Imagine exiting and realoding sections of the game only because someone has seen you. Or losing all the time because you dont want to use any health items.

The chase section in Act 3 was a SUPER pain in the ass!! It is impossible not to lose huge chunks of your health. And if you lost a lot on one part of the chase scene, it was impossible to finish the next with no health item

I had two saves just in case. One for the section I am playing and one for the previous just in case I screwed over the last one.

I think it was worth it though. I wanted desperately to get the "Big Boss" face camo. It scares soldiers off and drop their weapons. It also awarded me with numerous weapons plus stealth and bandanna for free and I had enough drebin points to purchase the gun that produces tornados.

It is awesome to watch the tornado take anything on its path. Very awesome physics. It fills the whole place with items too

And in that video he is right about one thing... Why does snake spend the whole game questioning whats going on, like he\'s surprised at everything.

It\'s just the dialogue in that game was so bad sometimes.

Otacon: "blah blah blah something something metal gear"

Snake: "Metal Gear?"

Otacon: "Blah blah blah something something The Patriots"

Snake: "The patriots?"

Seriously.... 20min long cut scenes of that. And the part where otacon cries was some of the worst voice acting ive ever heard, i literally laughed at it.

Too funny.....i can actually see this game doing that!...

Quote
There was so much Kojima story masturbation in it I would go and make a sandwich while a half an hour of bad dialogue tried to make sense of things. And it really was more of a boring action game than a stealth game.

WTF?...Kojima story masturbation??.........i\'ll probably still pick this up,...i thought kojima told a pretty solid story in mgs for the psx...but in trying to tell a complex story Kojima sometimes makes it overly complicated, in trying to make the game sophisticated,...in some parts in prt 2 i was lost on some of the dialogue....i guess no-one dares say anything like "uhm...kojima i think we should take this out,..or i feel we should disregard that"....i did think that liquid living thru ocelot\'s arm was a bit hokey.

I\'ll mostly be picking this up to see if the game finally answers the questions from previous games...mostly the mystery of the patriots and the fate of helga\'s(i think that\'s her name) baby.
knowledge, wisdom & understanding..these are the basic fundamentals of life

if you can\'t amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t....

Yeah exactly. What I meant was that sometimes it really seemed to me like the ONLY person alive who could make sense of this was Kojima. So the story was really just for him.

I really did like the game, despite how hard I was on it.

I didn\'t really read the thread, but Kojima has always had a strong, almost pervasive sense of post-modernism through his games; it\'s intrisic to the very fabric of what makes Metal Gear Solid what it is.

Sorry, but the story-line doesn\'t really have to make sense.

Having said that, I skipped the majority of the thread for fear of spoilers. My PS3 is out of commission at the moment, so MGS4:GotP is just sitting there.

I\'m sorry, but a story line does have to make sense. It\'s a friggin\' story. If a story doesn\'t make sense, then anyone could just write a bunch of jibberish.

I was was a solider.
I killed people, but those people came back to life.
One of them was a twin - who had sex with my mother.
That mother was a clone of my grandmother tho\'.
So now her spirit lives in my evil clones foot..becuase they..you know..had sex.
I have to fight them.
Because the arab people are evil and own weird robots.

See? That was a pointless story that made no sense. Much like Kojima\'s self masturbation.

Totally agree with the post-modernism. Thats what I ve pointed too in this thread.

I think it does make sense though. It just does it in an extremely unconditional manner. Many elements in the story transcend what we see in reality thus it looks abstract. But there is some logical cohesion within the world of the game. The story makes sense depending on the way it is viewed by the player. If the player views the game\'s environment with the preconception that everything should be 100% faithful to reality and explained 100% "scientifically", it wont make sense at all.

I think people who havent been exposed enough to literature and other forms of art are bound to view the story and its elements negatively.

Btw I think the thread is spoiler free.

Honestly, you are now trying to say people who don\'t get the story are uneducated? That\'s the most absurd and idiotic thing I have ever read.

It\'s a videogame. It\'s not high art.  Better yet, it is a videogame by a guy who wanted to be a director but didn\'t have what it took.

I think you\'re over-thinking and stating it as some weird work of art that only intellects are able to decipher...it\'s a realistic, fantasy game. so it screams realism on the skimming surface, but everything is very over-the-top. It even makes fun of itself because of this on the beginning of act 2.

just take it for what it is..most of it made sense for me (aside from the stuff i pm\'ed about but we came to our own conclusion) and i didn\'t view it as complicated as you put it

Wow, really?  You\'re going to be a snob about a VIDEO GAME storyline?  Hypothetically, even if it isn\'t a convoluted mess of a story highlighted by the fact that Kojima can\'t direct and its readily apparent by his pacing and storytelling ability.  Even IF the game presented a well thought out, in depth critique on the human condition, you sound like a complete jackass.  There are things called opinions, people have them, doesn\'t mean they haven\'t been exposed to enough literature or art.

Stop making excuses, some people don\'t like it and they have valid points for not liking it.  Not everyone appreciates the beauty of Mondrian\'s Broadway Boogie Woogie but I would never accuse them of being uneducated because of it.

No no thats not what I am saying.

I am not talking about the complexity of the story mind you. I am talking about its ways of expression, elements which are often "supernatural, unrealistic or surreal" or  overdeveloped and it may go beyond what many people would care. It does it so unconventionally that sometimes we may try to find some sort of explanation in things that do not need any realistic or scientific explanation.

For example, take the presentation of the Beasts after you beat them. The whole presentation is unrealistic and unnatural but it is trying to describe something "real". Spoiler:[ strange glowing energy surrounding them? black ink vomit? supernatural powers braking windows and objects? black and white imagery? cries and screams in the background? dissapearing from the area and then appearing in a white void and back again? the girls trying to hug and almost make love to snake (lie down and see what happens) etc ] edit: Another example: Liquid acquiring life through Ocelot\'s transplanted hand? Get out of here!! These parts are subject of criticism and rejection. Not everyone takes the game for what it is

It doesnt require to be an intellectual. Just to be a little open minded and some familiarity to similar attempts (thats why I mentioned exposure to other forms of art).

Of course someone may like or hate the game even with an open mind and familiarity. Like personal taste.

There could be various reasons for disliking something. One could be personal taste which is perfectly understandable. For example not everyone likes post modernism. Just like someone doesnt like drama movies or horror movies or whatever. The movie the Fountain is another similar example. "Why should anyone care about a guy doing Yoga in a round bulb with a tree in it?"

Another reason could be bad design. Which is also perfectly understandable.

But many times people are confusing bad design with personal taste and things they arent accustomed to. This is where I am pointing to.

(not that the game is 100% free from some flaws)

Its a love it or hate it thing
