yeah but the overall design hasn’t changed since the early 80’s.

NASA and other developers were working on other versions of the next Gen shuttle which removes the need for booster rockets and would have the added advantage of handling like a powered plane in the atmosphere.

yup, but the huge NASA cutbacks prevented that. Lockheed-Martin, I believe was the designers.

Maybe they can get more funding finally.

yeah thats the one.

it was going to be nicknamed the penguin due to its flat design and from the documentary about it (it was about a couple of years ago I saw it)

it would have had double the carrying capacity of the shuttle and could take off and land on a normal runway.

Sorry to bring this up now, but what will happen to the ISS?

Will the Russians (I dont know if ESA can transport the components into space) take over for a while now?

One thing is for sure, they\'re gonna use this accident as a way of getting a brand new, purdy, state of the art shuttle designed and built.

for the time being it looks likt thr Russians will have to use their transports to ferry supplyes upto the ISS.

As for the Crew of the ISS, if anything gets nasty i think there is a esacpe capsule which is already linked to the ISS structure.

Like I said the shuttle is over 20 years old, that’s older than most of the members here at PSX2Central.

I come back to the forums after watching LOTR:TTT and I read my topic was closed..then opened......as long as it is still open I guess I am happy :)   Any news about the Explosion while I was gone?????

BTW LOTR:TTT was a Great movie, that was the first time I watched it! One thing I didnt like were the ads they could have had on TV....We are there to see a MOVIE not TV ads!

OMG, I SAW THE WHOLE THING!!!

I was driving on North Central, It has a clear view of downtown, well I wasn\'t driving my mom was, we just moved. So neways, I didn\'t know that the space shutle was going to go over north texas. But I heard it on the radio, so I move to the back seat to get a clear view of downtown, and there it was the shuttle, well at least a line of smoke with a big ball in front of it, then it just broke, it broke into 3 pieces, I lost sight of it b/c it went behind that big ball for a lil bit, then it came out the other side, and it was still falling apart. Then we went under the bridge and I lost sight of it, then I just heard this loud boom, well not really a boom it sounded more like a door getting slammed, but really hard. We got to my moms work, so i watched the news, then 30 minutes later a bunch of cops came and parked in the field infront of the clinic, and I went out, and they were guarding this tiny lil piece of metal. It\'s so sad!! my first space shuttle that i\'ve seen in real life in the air had to explode. :( :(

The Russians are supposed to be sending a cargo vessel up there next week I believe they said.

We also have three guys left in the ISS. I think the Russians will bring them down, otherwise, they\'ll have to use the escape capsule on the ISS.
